US Real GDP Growth Revised Upward Slightly, But Economic Indicators Are Mixed The Monday Economic Report published by the National Association of Manufacturers (NAM) notes that the U.S. manufacturing sector’s growth in 2015 has been lackluster to moderate. Most recently, new durable goods orders fell 2.0% in August, offsetting the 1.9% increase in July. Excluding transportation, new orders for durable goods were unchanged in August. The University of Michigan and Thomson Reuters also reported that consumer confidence has fallen to an 11-month low. Likewise, the strong dollar and struggling global economy have also dampened exports. In terms of housing, new home sales increased 5.7% in August, following a 12.0% gain in July (the fastest growth for new home sales since February 2008), but existing home sales fell 4.8% in August and inventories of existing homes have increased. Looking at specific global markets, the Caixin Flash China General Manufacturing PMI has declined again, to its lowest level since March 2009, following 7 straight months of contraction in the Chinese manufacturing sector. Meanwhile, European activity appears to be improving. Here at home, the Bureau of Economic Analysis has revised Q2 real GDP slightly higher, with the U.S. economy expanding by 3.9 percent in its latest estimate (up from 3.7% in its previous estimate). NAM predicts real GDP growth for Q3 will be 2.2%, and 2.4% for all of 2015 (same as for 2014), with 2016 growth expected to be slightly better at 2.5%. |
