ISPA Model Bedding Law
ISPA has crafted model legislation for states to consider that is designed to combat the spread of bed bugs by requiring that any used mattress intended for resale be cleaned and sanitized in a manner that will kill the bedbugs and their eggs prior to its resale to consumers. The legislation was developed using best practices procured from states that currently require the cleaning, sanitizing, and labeling of used mattresses prior to resale.
Currently, many states have no laws requiring used mattresses to be sanitized, a practice that, if properly done, can help kill bed bugs. As a result, used mattresses are not properly cleaned prior to use by consumers and may contain bed bugs. If your state is currently examining approaches to combat bed bugs, please consider ISPA’s model legislation.
