Advocacy

The International Sleep Products Association (ISPA) speaks with a united voice for the mattress industry on issues that affect mattress manufacturers and suppliers. Among these are ongoing efforts to assist local, state and federal government agencies and lawmakers in implementing the federal flammability standard in an effective and practical manner; addressing international trade issues involving the mattress industry; and improving mattress tagging and sanitation laws. Link to the items listed to the left for more in-depth information on these topics.

Critical to ISPA’s advocacy efforts is the grassroots support of our members. The industry’s goals will be furthered if ISPA members develop relationships with their representatives in Congress to influence legislation that affects the industry. To help members communicate more easily with elected officials, ISPA has created a Legislative Action Center which contains information on pending legislation and a Grassroots Toolbox that offers practical advice on contacting your Senator or Representative.

The ISPA Government Relations Committee develops and implements an advocacy agenda that is reviewed by the ISPA Board of Trustees. The Committee also develops Board-approved industry positions on a number of regulatory, legislative and political issues of importance to the industry.

The Committee works with the membership to determine which issues are top priorities for the industry. It then considers which of those issues are specific enough to the industry that they should be handled directly by ISPA, and which involve other stakeholders such that ISPA can provide member value more efficiently by partnering with other associations and groups to achieve a common goal.

ISPA's existing relationships with federal and state regulatory agencies, other industry and trade groups, and the safety and scientific communities give members tools to address other issues that periodically arise. These may include working with regulators and other stakeholders on consumer safety issues. ISPA routinely forms other relationships as our strategies become more defined. The Association is committed to providing members the latest information on issues and trends that affect their industry and representing the mattress industry with a strong, unified voice.
