The Sleep Products Safety Council (SPSC)

The Sleep Products Safety Council is a safety division of the International Sleep Products Association. SPSC's mission is to provide consumer information, support research and promote activities that advance the safety of sleep products.  Since 1986, the SPSC has taken a leadership role in:

• Funding groundbreaking research into the causes and dynamics of open-flame mattress fires
• Working with scientists and regulators to develop methods for testing the fire performance of mattresses
• Conducting landmark scientific studies showing that mattresses pose no indoor air quality risks
• Sponsoring seminars and workshps that meet mattress manufacturers' specific educational needs

SPSC Safety Hangtag Program

The research and educational programs conducted by the SPSC are mainly supported by the SPSC Safety Hangtag Program.  These hangtags are  purchased and affixed to new mattresses on a voluntary basis by manufacturers.  Manufacturers of more than 220 million mattresses have purchased SPSC Safety Hangtags.  The tags certify that mattresses meet Federal Flammability Standards and inform consumers about the safe use of sleep products. For more information about SPSC Hangtags, e-mail Jane Oseth at joseth@sleepproducts.org
