Providing Proactive Industry Advocacy and Research
- ISPA takes a lead role in representing the interests of the mattress industry at the U.S. federal, state, and local levels of government, maintaining a watchful eye on legislative and regulatory developments. ISPA communicates regulatory developments to all members worldwide, as these issues also affect suppliers exporting products into the U.S. who must comply with U.S. safety standards, customs, and related laws.
- The Sleep Product Safety Council (SPSC), the safety arm of the Association, supports the industry at large by providing important consumer safety information, supporting industry research, and promoting safe industry practices.

Expanding the Market for Mattress Sales
- For over 25 years ISPA’s Better Sleep Council (BSC) has helped expand the market for mattress sales by educating consumers through extensive media campaigns and its Web site www.bettersleep.org about the important role that mattresses play in their sleep, health and quality of life. The BSC also conducts valuable consumer and sleep research. The BSC now offers a micro Website for the Spanish-language community.
- The association reaches out to mattress retailers through Sleep Savvy magazine (free to ISPA members and retailers) to help them better understand consumer trends and attitudes, offer successful selling ideas, business insights and know-how, and tips on helping customers make the sleep-health-mattress connection.

Encouraging Environmental Stewardship
ISPA is encouraging environmental stewardship through its recently launched sustainability initiative ISPAEarth™. From material sourcing through distribution and used product disposal, this initiative will help improve the environmental impact of our industry’s operations and products, and raise awareness of our overall environmental stewardship. One aspect is to coordinate the efforts of mattress manufacturers, suppliers, retailers and recyclers to reduce the industry’s footprint on landfills and to improve the recycling of used mattress components. These efforts will reduce the amount of used product on the market and help eliminate mattress renovators, a group that competes for nearly $1 billion in new mattress sales.
