As anticipated, Rhode Island Governor Lincoln Chafee yesterday signed into law legislation that will create the nation’s second mattress recycling program. ISPA worked closely with leadership in the Rhode Island Senate and House to craft this legislation.

Rhode Island now becomes the second state to enact mattress recycling legislation, the first being Connecticut, which enacted its law this past May. The Rhode Island and Connecticut laws are very similar. The new Rhode Island law requires mattress manufacturers to propose a detailed plan for mattress recycling in the state by July 1, 2015.

Similar mattress recycling legislation is pending in the California Legislature.
